Paediatric First Aid

Why would I want to do this course?
This 12 hour course is designed to give you the knowledge, skills and techniques for providing first aid where you work regularly with infants and young children or have a duty of care. This qualification meets the requirements set by Ofsted for those working in early years settings. If you are a parent or relative it will also give you the confidence to deal with your own children should they have an accident or medical emergency.

An additional short module (of around 2-3 hours) in the use of external automated defibrillators (AEDs) can be added offering a dual qualification of Paediatric First Aid and AED use.

What would I do on this course?
Around 70% of the 12 hour course will be spent in interactive, practical activity. It will be delivered by qualified teachers and trainers who also have practical first aid experience in childcare settings.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

• Assess the situation so you can act safely and effectively in an emergency
• Deal with the unconscious child
• Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on infants and children
• Deal with choking
• Administer first aid to a child who is wounded, bleeding and suffering from shock
• Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries
• Deal with a range of injuries to bones and joints including the neck and spine
• Recognise medical emergencies including anaphylactic shock and asthma
• Deal with environmental concerns such as the effect of heat and cold
• Protect, insulate and move casualties
• Record and report incidents
• Consider the implications for emergency plans
• Appreciate how to prevent cross infection
• Use available equipment

Assessment is continuous through each section of the programme.

Included in the price is the use of recommended first aid materials, an easy to follow individual course booklet and one CPR training manikin per 2 participants. You will also receive an accredited, recognised certificate, issued by ITC an awarding body, valid for 3 years.
